(kings in portugues is reis), so they called it Angra dos Reis. The rain and the hot and humid weather made passing through Angra a special
moment. One of the men in the fleet, Américo Vespúcio, wrote to Portugal:
"A few times I felt in ecstasy with the smell of the trees and flowers and with the flavor of these fruits and roots, I even thought being near Earth’s Paradise. And what will I say about the number of birds, the color of their feather and chant, how many and how beautiful are they? I don’t want to prolong myself in this, because I doubt someone will give me any credit".

In 1608 the settlement became village receiving the name of Vila dos Reis Magos da Ilha Grande, but in 1617, the murder of the parish priest determinated the transference of the colonizers’ centre to the area where the city is located now. The elevation of the city of Angra dos Reis was in 1853.
